Christmas Joy for Two

It’s the season of love, best spent with that special someone. Here’s how you can create something meaningful and memorable from this wonderful time of the year.

By Lyn Chan

Ah, Christmas. It’s a time of giving and sharing. But it’s also the time to eat, drink and be merry. So, for the best of all worlds, consider adding these events to you and your partner’s calendars for a jolly good year-end celebration.

Save the animals

Adore animals? Then spread some cheer to the furries and support the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) by volunteering your time. Various positions are available, including animal shelter helpers, ambassadors and merchandise sales assistants – there’ll surely be something that appeals to the both of you. Plus, people tend to find spending time with animals quite therapeutic, so it’s a win-win for all.

See Orchard Road transform

Singapore’s Christmas on a Great Street is set to be extra memorable this year, thanks to Mickey Mouse and other iconic Disney characters who will be featured all over Orchard Road, from the grand arches that line the roads to the bright, dazzling lights along the streets. From 10 November 2018 to 1 January 2019, swing by Orchard to snap a photo with Mickey and stroll through Disney Magical Moments from Tanglin Mall to Plaza Singapura. Along the way, check out The Great Christmas Village at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza. The holiday market takes place from now till 26 December 2018, and is replete with amusement rides, food stalls selling all things delicious, and pop-ups offering great buys.

Cook with love

You know what they say: Food cooked with love always tastes better. Better yet, step into the kitchen and whip up something yummy together. Not sure where to begin? Head to ToTT.

The popular cooking studio has two outlets in Singapore – one at Suntec, the other at Century Square – and focuses on teaching home cooks how to make a wide range of dishes. Prices for lessons vary, so visit ToTT for the full list of classes.

Experience winter in Singapore

Why trek all the way to New York’s world-famous Rockefeller Center ice skating rink when we have the annual Christmas Wonderland spectacle at Gardens by the Bay (30 November to 26 December 2018, 4pm to 11pm daily), complete with its ‘Skating Under The Stars’ outdoor rink. Gorgeous light sculptures frame the skating rink that’s specially flown in from Switzerland, giving it a magical look and feel that’s perfect for a romantic night out.

Admission starts from $4 per person.

Get ready for a visual feast

Nestled within the ArtScience Museum’s Furture World exhibition is Sketch Christmas – a fascinating festive installation (1 December 2018 to 6 January 2019) by renowned Japanese collective, teamLab. Via 10 interactive displays, the exhibition’s digital magic makes Santa a reality. Bring out your inner child and watch Father Christmas deliver presents with his trusty reindeers. If you and your partner are feeling artsy, draw your own Santa, scan your works of art, and see your doodles come to life on the big screen.
